“ Art is painful. It’s potentially dangerous. Explosive. It takes everything from you, sometimes more than you can afford. It’s a beast, and it is always starving. You feed it and feed it… until you have nothing left. But you don’t mind because you’d rather chase the high of creating something then live in darkness. It’s insanity.”

Color Study

This is a project that really challenged me. I have always been intimidated with shooting at night. Every photographer knows how difficult it is to work with little to no light. Our cameras whole functions are limited to the amount of light available and how we are able to utilize it.

My chosen inspiration for this project is the HBO series Euphoria. I was always so impressed with the show’s ability to work in low lighting and the colorful combinations of lights from clubs, leds, and bars. With this in mind I set out to the Domain in Austin to try and find colorful sources of light that I can use to paint my subject.

It was very difficult originally because I had planned to go to some of the bars and restaurants that had colorful lighting but I wasn’t yet 21 at the time. So with my original planned botch we looked around outside and found 2 perfect sources of light for the project. We spent around 30 minutes at each sight to experiment and test the capabilities of my camera until we got the perfect shots.

The Photographers Eye

This project is an exploration of the book “The Photographers Eye” by John Szarkowski. This book explores 5 key elements of photography: the thing itself, the detail, the frame, time, and vantage point. The topics he talks about in his book are all very important factors to consider when taking an image. The more elements you can incorporate into an image the more intriguing the image.

These are images of the Texas State Capital in Austin Tx. I love architecture and history so this was one of the first locations that came to mind. This particular collection of images focuses largely on framing and vantage point. I looked to create interesting images of a common and well known building, hoping to create a new experience for those who have seen this building hundreds of times.
